Toot and Puddle book cover "I'll Be Home for Christmas" by Holly Hubbie

Christmas at Home

How many books, movies, songs, and plays dramatize the importance of being home for Christmas? A snow storm means someone probably won't make it home. The suspense! The sadness if it can't happen!

There's No Place Like Home for the Holidays

Oh, there's no place like
Home for the holidays,
'Cause no matter how far away you roam
When you pine for the sunshine
Of a friendly gaze
For the holidays, you can't beat
Home, sweet home

I met a man who lives in Tennessee
And he was headin' for Pennsylvania
And some home made pumpkin pie
From Pennsylvania folks a travelin' down
To Dixie's sunny shore
From Atlantic to Pacific, gee
The traffic is terrific...

...but this year maybe not so much.

At Christmas, home is where your family is. But today's
families are spread out across the country. And if you include dear friends…

Last year we had a family gathering with my brother in Florida, but even then we couldn't gather everyone.

And this year we can't travel.

Well, there are different ways to be together.

Cards and packages have long been used to get close to our families and friends from afar.

Since Toot is away, Puddle signs all of the cards
"Merry Christmas! __________ and Puddle"
and waits for Toot to return and sign them
before putting them in the mail.

American Girl doll Molly's father is away in Europe in World War II. Above, she's writing a letter to him. Right, she finds a package he's sent. She hides it until Christmas morning so she can surprise the family with his presents under the tree.
