Movies

I make it a point to know as little as possible about movies before I see them. So when I took my preteen daughter to see Clueless I had no idea that it’s a retelling of Jane Austen’s Emma. First there was one coincidence. Then another. I started noticing how very much like Emma…  When we got out of the movie we went to get a bite to eat, and I said, “Do you want to go back and watch it again?” And we did.

My husband-to-be took me to see Bread and Chocolate on our first date, an excellent beginning.

Movies were our thing. We  got married in a movie theater: our guests threw popcorn instead of rice.

Video

In 1968 when my friends and I watched President Johnson announce on live TV that he would not seek reelection, we thought the war could soon end.

Joy!

At least for that night.

Books

I remember vividly the day Don Evans invited me into his home to discuss my illustrating his book of short stories. Quite a few additional memories center on the production of this book and on sharing it with the Chicago literary community.

And I remember learning that other people, even other readers, think it's weird that I read while brushing my teeth. I find this highly amusing. I mean, if I could hold a baby while brushing my teeth, why not hold a book?
